Rolex Yacht-Master II: A Watch for Sea Explorers

October 15, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Rolex Yacht-Master IISome people need to know what the time is more than others. Among them are divers, racing drivers, pilots, astronauts and, of course, yachtsmen. Rolex has developed a wristwatch specifically for the latter - the Rolex Yacht-Master II.
The first Rolex Yacht-Master was introduced in 1993 and strongly resembled the Rolex Submariner, except that it cost twice as much and was less water-resistant. Two years ago, the watchmaking company released the enhanced version of the timepiece – the Rolex Yacht-Master II. The watch has acquired a new useful feature for yacht races – a 10 minute countdown timer which can be set rotating the bezel and using the crown.
The movement of the watch has also undergone some changes. It still beats 28,800 times per hour, but uses the PARACHROM hairspring instead of an ordinary one. Thanks to this innovation, the Rolex Yacht-Master II is about ten times more insensitive to magnetic fields and shock-resistant.
The case of the timepiece has become larger –it now measures 43mm in diameter, which is considered rather large for Rolex. The Triplock crown on the right side of the case protects the movement from ingress of moisture – quite a necessary feature for yacht owners.
The bezel of the watch is made from very hard ceramic composite that is practically corrosion and scratch resistant. The colour of the material will not fade if exposed to sunlight.
The watch costs about $30.000 – apparently, those in Rolex responsible for pricing have decided that people who can afford a yacht can also purchase the Rolex Yacht-Master II.

Panerai Luminor Submersible: Watches for Underwater Explorers

October 12, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Panerai Luminor Submersible Among all the watchmaking companies, Officine Panerai is the one for which creating diver’s watches is the most natural. The brand is closely connected to frogmen. For over four decades, Panerai has supplied watches to the Italian Royal Navy.
With their large cases, luminescent hands and numerals and water resistance up to 300 meters, practically all Panerai Luminor timepieces are suitable for diving. The only things they are lacking to become true diver’s watches are a rubber strap and a rotating bezel. This is exactly what the Panerai Luminor Submersible watches bring to the product line of the company.
There are three Panerai Luminor Submersible watches in the Contemporary collection of the brand. Two of them are nearly identical, differing only in the material from which their cases are made and the dial patterns. The third one, the Luminor 1950 Submersible 1000 M, is an entirely different story. As its name indicates, the watch is water-resistant to 1000 meters, unlike the other two, which are water resistant to 300 meters. Just like the Rolex Sea-Dweller, it is equipped with a helium escape valve on the right side of the case to protect it from water penetration.
All Panerai Luminor Submersible watches feature a rotating bezel for measuring the duration of immersion. The bezel can be rotated only anti-clockwise so that if there is a measurement error, the bezel will show that the apparent immersion time is longer rather than shorter than the actual elapsed time. The dial of the watches features the date display window at 9 o’clock and the small seconds counter at 3 o’clock. They come with functional rubber straps which will not be damaged underwater.

Omega De Ville Co-Axial Watches: Classic Shape and Revolutionary Technology

October 08, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Omega De Ville Co-AxialThe Omega De Ville watches were first introduced by the watchmaking company in 1960. Within seven years of their introduction, the De Ville watch line became one of the most popular collections of Omega. These timepieces were the first to use a new revolutionary escapement - the Co-Axial escapement, which has been developed by Dr. George Daniels. For over two decades, the watchmaker has been trying to reduce the impulse friction in the escapement and thus to increase the accuracy and reliability of the watch movement.
Nowadays, the Co-Axial escapement is used in many Omega De Ville watches. One of them, the Omega De Ville Co-Axial Rattrapante, has two mechanisms that can measure the length of time of two different events. Another one, the Omega De Ville Co-Axial Chronoscope, features an unusual dial with three overlapping sub-dials displaying 30-minute, 12-hour and seconds counters. The Co-Axial escapement is also used in the Omega De Ville Hour Vision Annual Calendar. As the name of the watch suggests, its dial displays the date and month. The watch is the one of its kind capable of recognizing 30 and 31-day months. Due to this useful feature, the timepiece needs manual correction only one time in a year.
Unlike the above mentioned watches, The Omega De Ville Co-Axial Chronometer has only basic functions – it displays the date, hours, minutes and seconds and is perfect for those who like simple and classic timepieces. The De Ville Co Axial Chronograph is a modified version of the De Ville Chronometer which has three sub-dials at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock in addition to the basic hour, minute and seconds hands.
Besides the famous escapement, the reliability and precision of the Omega De Ville Co-Axial watches is guaranteed by the free sprung balance.

The Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute: A Watch for Astronauts

October 05, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

The Breitling Navitimer CosmonauteManufacturers of luxury watches like to add the words “aviator” and “pilot” to the name of their timepieces, but it is not likely that the men operating aircrafts really wear any of them during flights. The primary function of these watches is just to look good. Unlike such timepieces, Breitling watches, and the Breitling Navitimer watches in particular, have been used by pilots worldwide throughout the history of aviation. In 1936, the company became official supplier to the air force of the United Kingdom and Breitling watches have been issued to pilots ever since.
The Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute is a modified version of the Breitling Navitimer watch created in the early sixties. The story has it that Scott Carpenter, one of the astronauts selected for the NASA Mercury space program, suggested the idea of making a watch with a 24 hour analog dial instead of the typical 12 hour dial to Breitling. The 24 hour dial was necessary because it is impossible to tell day from night in space. The company eagerly embraced this idea, and created the Breitling Navitimer with a 24 hour dial which the astronaut wore during the space flight in 1962. Later on, Breitling kept producing this version of the timepiece under the name “Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute”.
Like most watches meant for pilots, the Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute has a flyback function. This horological complication saves time by allowing its wearer to stop, reset and restart the chronograph with a single push of the button. There are plenty of the Navitimer Cosmonaute versions to choose from. The watches come with dials in black and silver and sub-dials in silver, black and golden. The cases of the watch are also available in different versions – in red or yellow gold and stainless steel.

September 17, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Girard-Perregaux pour Ferrari watchThough the number of so called “car” watches is great, this fashion seems to be fading while watches named in honor of cars, racing and racers seem to be released almost mechanically, by force of habit.

The tandem existed and prospered due to the fact that Luigi Macaluso used to be an auto racer for Scuderia Ferrari. Watches from Girard-Perregaux for Ferrari collection enjoyed fantastic popularity with both sportsmen and ordinary customers.

However, the year 2005 brought quite an unpleasant surprise – the new Girard-Perregaux for Ferrari collection was not presented. For an year public was in official dark about this matter, though everyone knew that the watches of Italian car legend Ferrari will be issued by guys from Italian watch legend Panerai.
Panerai emphasizes the fact that Ferrari are separate, independent watches, rather than just Panerai watches with Prancing horse on the dial.

Tag Heuer also has something to be proud of. Monaco watches that were for the first time released in 1969 and that got fantastic popularity after the famous Le Man film in which Steve McQueen) wore this model. TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-BenzOne more great car watch from Tag Heuer is TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz. September 14, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Omega Seamaster 007 SpecialOmega Seamaster Professional lineup is fantastically popular not only due to high quality watches. As well this lineup got great fame due to the fact that in the last four movies in the James Bond saga Omega Seamaster Professionals were worn by Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Everyone understands that the world known brand Omega is gladly milking its status as “the choice of James Bond”. Baselworld 2008 was not an exception. Omega presented its new Seamaster 007 Limited Edition.

The new Seamaster 007 Professional is a bit different from those worn in the movies. Those had blue dials and bezels, while this one features a black dial and bezel. The reason for such a change is evident – the brand had already issued 2 007 limited edition Seamasters that featured blue bezels and dials.

Beginning with 1995 Omega has been associated with James Bond saga. In that year Pierce Brosnan became the new James Bond and wore Omega Seamaster Quartz professional in “Golden Eye”. Omega 007 BaselIn 2002, when Die Another Day came out, Omega released a special 007 edition of the lineup Omega Speedmaster Professional. The only thing that remained the same was the watch brand that is preferred by mister Bond – this again was Omega. That time James Bond wore Omega Seamaster 300 M Diver Chronometer.
The 2008 version came again with 007 logo, this time in red.
Each of the limited edition wristwatches has been produced in 10.007 pieces.

Only Omega Speedmaster watches passed the test and were chosen for Apollon program. In 1969 Omega Speedmaster got on the Moon on the wrist of Buzz Oldrin.
Omega watches are known ones of the most water resistant watches. On November, 23 1976 Jacques Mayol who was the first free diver to descend to 100 meters wore Omega Seamaster while diving.
Together with these achievements Omega has frequently been the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games, beginning with 1932.

Navigation + Timer = Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph

September 10, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News, Watch Series

Breitling adtThe famous Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph appeared in the late 1940s, when the watchmaking company integrated an aviation circular slide rule in their chronographs. This built-in computer allowed pilots to perform a wide range of flight calculations. It was capable of dividing and multiplying numbers, converting miles into kilometers and even calculating descent rate. The wristwatch was officially introduced in 1952. It immediately became very popular with pilots and was even named the official watch of the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association). Even today the Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph is the most famous timepiece that Breitling has ever produced.

Naturally, over more than six decades the watch has gone through some changes. The main change has affected the dial – it has gained a date display window at nine o’clock, the Breitling logo in the center and larger sub-dials. These sub-dials at 9, 12 and 6 o’clock indicate hours, minutes and seconds, respectively.
Breitling Navimeter ChronographDue to the modern lifestyle which includes a lot of flying, Breitling has integrated a bright red hand providing the time in a second time zone. The case of the Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph has become a little larger. Finally, not long after the quartz revolution, the manual-winding Venus movement of the wristwatch was replaced by a quartz one.

The winding crown on the right side of the Breitling Navitimer Quartz Chronograph is not screw-locked, that is why the watch is water-resistant only to 30 meters. It means that the timepiece should not be worn while swimming or diving, but can withstand splashes of rain or water.
The timepiece comes in a number of versions. It can be made from gold with steel or stainless steel only and have bracelets crafted either from leather or from gold.

Rolex Oyster Submariner: Example of Longstanding Tradition

September 07, 2009 By: WatchMaster Category: Cool watch News

Rolex Submariner Every brand has a secret of success. The secret of the watchmaking company with, perhaps, the most recognizable name in the industry, Rolex, is in continuity in design. The watches created a few decades ago are updated and improved, but still have basically the same appearance. Thanks in no small part to this longstanding tradition, the Rolex Oyster Submariner has become one of the most popular watches of the brand.
The first Rolex Oyster Submariner watch was introduced in 1953, and was revealed at the Basel Show in 1954. Throughout more than fifty years, a few things have changed. The movement has become more advanced – it is now magnetic- and shock-resistant, as well as equipped with the latest innovation of Rolex - the Parachrom hairspring, improving the precision of the watch. As of 2007, it was also certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. Another change affected the dial of the Rolex Oyster Submariner - a mixture of tritium and phospor is now used to paint luminescent indices instead of less safe radium paint. Finally, in the late 1960s a date display window appeared at 3 o’clock.
Rolex SubmarinerBut in general, the Rolex Oyster Submariner remained the same. The watch is water-resistant to 300 meters, which makes it perfect for diving. The winding crown of the watch has the Triplock system, ensuring that water does not enter the inside of the case and damage the movement. The case of the timepiece is made from gold or corrosion-resistant 904L stainless steel and features a unidirectional, counterclockwise rotatable bezel for safe immersion. The dial of the watch is still easily recognizable by the so-called Mercedes hands and the Submariner logo. The bracelet of the Rolex Oyster Submariner is made from stainless steel and comes with an extension link which allows the owner of the watch to wear it in a wetsuit.
